Santorum: Being Female is a Mental Disorder

It has been my experience that when dealing with females, you need to treat them as though they have a mental disorder… especially those that are constantly seeking equality in the workplace, the military, and in the home. Women need to know their place and need to know when it is okay for them to speak. They were put on this earth for two reasons, and two reasons alone: taking care of their husband, and giving birth to his children… that is all. Any woman who tells you otherwise is obviously touting the liberal agenda of equality, and they need to be told the truth of their purpose. It is a disorder that can be fixed, but not until they go through several years of therapy to understand that they need to be subservient.

So has Santorum grown that mustache yet so he can just twirl it while cackling and just solidify his persona as a cartoon villain?

What I would like to point out, and I don’t know if people have yet, is that this is very, very ableist/mentalist. How dare you a) say that all women have “mental disorders” but b) ALSO insinuate that mentally ill people need hand-holding and even discipline so they can be contributing members to society or fulfill a role that is so insultingly antiquated?!?

But WHAT IF- what if there was a woman that was barren? What if there was a woman who for whatever reason (maybe- with sickening irony- because she has a “mental disorder,” as I have witnessed firsthand) cannot fully wait hand and foot on her husband and perhaps requires him to aid her to be healthy? Does this women deserve to be married? Or should she be an unmarried spinster without contraception? Is she sinful because she can’t provide for her husband? Does she get a ticket to Hell?

Also, I’d like to discuss the portion about sending a woman to therapy so that her “disorder” can be “fixed.” That is perpetuating hurtful stereotypes, by insinuating that the mentally ill can be miraculously “fixed” by therapy. As if they were broken or inferior because of their health condition. And that therapy is a magic tool that is a cure-all for mental disorders. This is so incredible offensive to someone living with a chronic mental illness, especially one for which talk therapy isn’t helpful. But I guess I am mostly objecting to the fact that Santorum clearly views the mentally ill as being “broken,” with therapy (which can be expensive) as a way to effectively and easily “fix” them.

Not every woman is made to be a 50s housewife, Mr. Santorum. And it’s not because we’re liberal, or lesbian, or feminist, or any other evils you might think. How dare you appropriate people with mental illness- regardless of gender- to make such a hateful, sexist, condescending point. Classic white male privilege! I have no respect for you.
