This sequence from episode 108 features one of my favorite lighting and color schemes we’ve ever accomplished in either Avatar or Korra. The dialogue exchange and fight scene are also among my favorites. As Mike says, “You like shows where stuff happens? Then Korra could be for you. Stuff happens.”

THEORIES FOR THE REST OF TLOK THIS SEASON

So I watched the episode again and I’M HAVING FEELINGS. I don’t know if people have theorized this already ignore this if they have;

Amon and Tarrlok are brothers?! Or are in the very least related heavily with Yakone. During the Korra v. Tarrlok fight, we get a angry reaction from Tarrlock when compared to Amon, and at the very end, Tarrlock is shown in the same kind of pose as Amon has been; looking up, reaching toward the viewer. Not to mention they’re given the same musical cues. Shit like this is not done by mistake! Visual and aural parallels are important!

So I’m guessing that bloodbending is gonna be a huge thing now. Like, I’m gonna take a guess that Amon was involved with Yakone (and probably Tarrlok) in a very negative way. Bloodbending is the kind of thing that, even with probably being more widespread at this time period, is still terrifying as fuck.

So my working theory right now is: Yakone gets his bending taken away by Aang, some time later has some kids. Bent on revenge, he teaches his waterbending son bloodbending, and his unfavored non-bender son bears some bullying brunt from his brother. Then maybe Yakone gets burninated by some firebenders, the boys are left alone, waterbender brother grows up to be Tarrlok, non-bender brother grows up to be Amon, who has a serious chip on his shoulder (against all benders) because of the abuse he suffered from his bro. He knows about the kind of bad stuff Tarrlok/Yakone had planned and starts the Equalists up in a kind of retaliation, but he’s only a slightly lesser evil in the grand scheme of things.

Of course this is just going get disproven when they reveal Yakone never had a family or whatever, but I’m gonna stick to my guns on Amon and Tarrlok being related.

OR TARRLOK AND AMON ARE THE SAME PERSON SOMEHOW AND AMONLOK IS BLOODBENDING THE BENDING OUT OF PEOPLE BECAUSE YAKONE WAS PSYCHOPATHIC? IDK IDK

FFFF WHAT AN EPISODE. Srsly that was such good stuff. Mako needs better lines though t b h.

-I still stand by my quibbles that the shorter season is kinda sacrificing character development. 3/4 of Team Avatar still need work. :/

BUT OKAY PREDICTION TIME: Next week is gonna be ‘FUCK WHERE THE SHIT IS KORRA’ time. Tarrlok will release the bros (but not Asami because shes “suspect” :[) all smug-like, the bros and Tenzin flip out about a missing Korra and start hearing all of Tarrloks lies about her and her fight with him. So the bros get Naga and go on a rescue mission. Maybe there are cuts back and forth to Korra, but tbh I’d kinda like a Korra-less episode (just this once!) so that the boys and Asami get character development.

I’m excited now. I wish this season was longer, but now we’re getting to the plotty-plot. Just as long as we get char development in there too.

Oh man, you know what would be really cool? An ep without Korra. I love Korra, but I think it would be interesting to have an ep that focuses on Mako, Bolin and Asami so they can get some character development. They can deal with the aftermath of the Korra v. Tarrlok fight and all the lies he tells afterwards, and they search for her all ep and at the end Team Avatar breaks out their Avatar and MAYBE AVATAR STATE? THAT WOULD BE COOL. oh and Mako and Asami will probably have an awkward conversation about Korra. GREAT.

Empire: I have a question about the nudity. We didn’t bring this up with George when he was here, but obviously it’s kind of become a thing in pop culture—the amount of nudity and “sexposition”…

Oh hey that SNL skit is terribly, disappointingly true to life!

But srsly, this irks me a lot. The nudity this season is so overwhelmingly male gaze (save for a brief and appreciated shirtless and dirty Joe Dempsie) and shoehorned into every episode it’s totally ridic. I know it’s HBO but come on.
